Owen's Profile
Owen was born and raised in Canterbury and has spent the last 20 years practising law here as a specialist litigator. Originally a Partner with another large Christchurch firm he then spent two years operating his own firm and travelling extensively overseas before joining Cavell Leitch Law to become the head of the civil litigation department. Owen is a LEADR trained and qualified mediator and has conducted numerous mediations.
Owen has extensive experience in litigation covering almost every aspect of the law. These include:
Commercial litigation for large corporate clients including publicly listed building companies, banks, financial institutions, insurance companies, land developments companies and tertiary education institutions to Court of Appeal level which have included landmark decisions on important areas of commercial law and practise such as company amalgamations.
Private civil litigation and debt collection for private clients and for two prominent Christchurch Debt collection agencies including disputes over contracts, torts, land and boundaries, guarantees, and intellectual property rights.
Employment law including contract negotiation and representation of private and corporate clients at mediation and before Employment Relations Authority, Employment Court and Court of Appeal.
Mediation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in all areas of litigation practice.
Owen's team won the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Awards in both 2009 and 2010 and the Insurance Law Award in 2011 at the prestigious New Zealand Law Awards.
