We are pleased to announce that Sam Cowan has been promoted to Principal of the Cavell Leitch dispute resolution team.
Sam has a special interest in construction and insurance disputes. He believes that no two matters are the same and a careful and considered approach is required in each case. He enjoys building relationships with his clients and working with them to resolve any problems they may be facing.
Sam has experience acting for clients in negotiations, mediations, arbitrations, and litigation in the District Court, High Court, and Court of Appeal. He specialises in:
- acting for construction companies, developers, and building owners in a variety of construction disputes, including leaky building, breach of contract and defective building work claims.
- acting for and against professionals in respect of professional negligence claims.
- working in insurance litigation including advising clients on policy interpretation and challenging declined claims.
Sam also has extensive experience in commercial disputes. Some highlights for Sam have been advising one of the largest music streaming services and the largest international agricultural co-operatives on their obligations under New Zealand law as well as representing one of the largest food companies in Asia in a dispute with its New Zealand distributor, and an overseas telecommunications company in a dispute regarding a joint venture with the government of a Pacific Island nation.
